Current Situation and Struggle of Women in the Retail industry
Today, Retail industry has a trend of diversification and globalization, but interesting gender differences still exist From the leader circle to the bottom staff, the gender ratio shows different trends, which may represent the industry’s perception and perception of gender.
As everyone knows, the proportion of female employees in the retail industry is very large, basically the retail workers you meet will often be a lady, and the retailer will also tend to give priority to women in the recruitment of grassroots staff, but is this situation the same in the leadership circle? In fact, the proportion of women in the leadership circle is much smaller, unlike the basic employees.
Every woman says that only 20% of executive teams are women despite a huge female workforce(Mandy Garner 2020), this ratio means that retailers need to seriously solve this problem, the problem of diversity lack.
First of all, in the retail industry, there are so many women work at the grass-roots level, this situation are very easy to understand. Compared with men, female retail staff will give people a more easy communication and a more patient feeling, this feeling can make customers have the desire to buy something. Meanwhile, women look less aggressive than men,so women’s smiles are warmer and more contagious which can bring a nice mood to customers. These advantages is not difficult to understand why there are far more female workers at the grassroots level than men in the retail industry.
but why the upper level shows the opposite trend? In fact, women are also very suitable as leaders. Women have leadership and judgment that are not inferior to men. The reasons that affect the lack of female leaders can be as follows:
Compared to men, women appear to be less aggressive.
Some female leaders will not promote and appreciate the same sex.
The industry environment is not tolerant enough for female leaders, and there are few female leaders themselves. Too few women are prone to prejudice, leading to fewer and fewer women going to the upper echelons, which forms a vicious circle.
Regardless of the reason, this is a problem that needs to be solved. Women have paid a lot of labor in the retail industry and also have leadership skills, but they have not been given a corresponding position.
However, in fact, many people are trying to solve this problem and make a sound.
